Maine > Bangor

Author Stephen King grew up in this small inland city on Maine’s Penobscot River. Winters can be, ah, bleak. (Average January temp is 9.) But Bangor promises authentic—rather than touristy—small town charm, with clean air, cheap housing, a symphony, opera, international airport and its very own nuclear submarine base. Just watch out for moose! Of course you do need to like cold weather. Even in summer it rarely gets super hot. So if you are a beach bunny, Bangor might be a little much for you but if you yearn for that New England lifestyle, Bangor might be the the perfect retirement spot. It's got a lot great features packed into a relatively small city. Arts, Cafes, Restaurants, Colleges, Fresh Air and if you like to do winter sports….well you've got it all at your fingertips.
